Playing as a car racing around a small arena, you must pick up the ball and ping it back against your opponent’s goal, which is filled with breakable blocks within it.
Wreckout is a mix of Rocket League and Breakout in the best sort of ways.
Playing 1v1 or 2v2, you will be defending your goal and hoping to grab the ball. When you run into the ball rolling around the field, it will attach to a chain on the back of your car. This chain lasts about three hits against the opponent’s goal barriers (which work like Breakout tiles).
If you want to destroy the other player’s goal more quickly, you can whip your vehicle around and let go of the ball, sending it flying in that direction. This type of hit will destroy a tile in a single hit instead of several smaller hits. It’s risky as you lose the ball, but the it can be worth it if you directly collide with the tile. When it comes to your opponent having the ball, you can dash into them (as well as dash quickly around the screen), which will leave them stunned for a moment and dislodge their ball.
Recently, I got the chance to look at all of the games at the #SuperWarehouse Indie Gaming Party, and Wreckout was my choice for Best-In-Show. There is so much fun, even in the single arena to showcase the game’s mechanics. There does need to be some work on hitting the enemy car to dislodge the ball, as it is sometimes hard to grab the ball afterwards when you are stunned for a moment. I look forward to seeing more arenas added to the game!
Wreckout is currently in development, but in the meantime, you can follow its creation on the publisher’s website.
